Shining the spotlight on adult learning

The benefits of being an adult student will be highlighted by West Nottinghamshire College next week.

A series of events and activities are being staged by the college as part of national Adult Learners’ Week (12-18 May).

The college’s higher education team will be at Mansfield’s Four Season’s Shopping Centre throughout the week to advise the public about its range of university-level courses.

College staff will also give advice about the different study options available for adults wanting to return to education to employees at Eon in Phoenix Park, Nottingham, on Tuesday and Friday (15 and 18 May) and staff at Mansfield District Council on Thursday (17 May).

On Wednesday (16 May) the college’s adult and community learning service will be commending its adult students at a presentation at Mansfield Library.  Students aged 19 to 80 will receive certificates and awards in recognition of their progress and achievements on courses run at community venues in Mansfield and Ashfield.

Janice Hill, director of curriculum and standards, said: “Many adults return to education to not only enhance their career prospects but to study a subject for their own enjoyment.

“We’re proud to be backing Adult Learners’ Week and helping raise the profile of the positive impact that learning has on people’s lives, whatever their age.  The week is the ideal platform to showcase the educational opportunities available and the benefits of every type of learning.”

Adult Learners’ Week is a national celebration of the opportunities for adults of all ages the opportunity to explore the many different kinds of learning; whether they want to get a better job, try something new, be able to help children at school or discover something new about the world.

Co-ordinated by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), the week-long festival of learning is backed by thousands of supporters including councils, colleges and other education-providers.
