Being quiet and creative has paid off for students at Vision West Notts who have raised over £100 for charity.

Students on the Skills for Independent Living course at the college’s Derby Road campus will be presenting a cheque for £114.50 to The Riders For Health charity next week following a sponsored silence and selling creative cards at Christmas.

The group of ten learners, who have disabilities and / or learning difficulties, took part in the sponsored silence in December which paid for craft materials to produce handmade Christmas cards which they sold to staff and students at the college.

Elizabeth Dunn from The Riders For Health charity’s Northampton branch will be collecting the cheque from students on Thursday (15 March).  She will show students a thank you DVD from staff at the charity and issue them with certificates to thank them for their hard work. 

The charity manages and maintains the vehicles used in the delivery of health care and other vital services to rural communities in seven African countries.  It employs over 300 people in Africa and manages 1,300 vehicles which reach 12 million people.

Foundation studies tutor Bridget Hos said: “The group worked very creatively and thoughtfully to raise the money for the charity. 

“They decided it would be good to give others a chance to have medical treatment as they learnt that in Africa, people will walk great distances for days to receive treatment and sometimes it’s sadly too late for children and the elderly to receive medical care.”
