There are two pathways on offer through West Notts College and
Schools partnerships for 14 – 16 year olds.
These two distinct pathways are designed to meet the needs of students and are on offer across various days during the week.
Pathway One - Specialised Learning
West Notts Specialised Learning is aimed at students who have the ability but would benefit from a practical learning
experience in an industrial workshop environment, gaining relevant employability skills.
West Notts Specialised Learning – Post 14
This two year programme offers 14 – 16 year olds the opportunity to add a vocational dimension to their studies
through specialist courses and teaching expertise. Young people study at college to develop vocational knowledge,
understanding and skills, working towards nationally recognised specialist qualifications. Courses are available at
Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2. There is an expectation that students will have an interest in their chosen subject
and are able to work sensibly and independently.
West Notts Specialised Learning – Post 16
This one year programme is offered to year 12 students who, at 16 years old, do not feel sufficiently confident to leave
school and want to add a vocational/specialist strand to their studies. This programme gives students the opportunity
to combine their general studies at school for three days per week, with specialised courses at college for two days per
week. Courses are available at Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2.
Pathway Two – Alternative Learning
West Notts Alternative Learning is aimed at students who are not fully engaged in learning
for a variety of individual reasons i.e. exclusion, disengagement, bullying etc; or for those
young people that have continually struggled with academic studies. The aim is to re-engage
and motivate young people back into learning through a vocational route of their choice.
West Notts Alternative Learning – Post 14
This one year programme is on offer to Key Stage 4 students who, in the past, have not been engaged or
who have shown little interest in their general education and learning. This programme offers vocational
choices that lead towards national qualifications, attending three days per week during term time. There is
also an opportunity to work towards adult qualifications in literacy and numeracy as well as ICT and personal
development.
West Notts Alternative Learning – Post 16
This one year transitional or bridging course is for those students with additional learning and
support needs that schools cannot offer post 16.
Students attend college on agreed days to access courses that aid their progression into further education,
improving life and employment skills. The aim of this programme is to offer vulnerable students the opportunity
of a staged progression route from school into college.
